Tomoichiro Oka is the chief of Foodborne Virus Laboratory, Division of Biomedical Food Research, National Institute of Health Sciences, Japan, since 2025 January. From 2002-2024, he worked in the field of enteric viruses focusing mainly on caliciviruses, at the Department of Virology II, National Institute of Infectious Diseases, Japan. During 2011 to 2014, he worked on human and animal enteric viruses as a visiting scholar at Dr. Linda J. Saif’s and Dr. Qiuhong Wang’s labs at The Ohio State University. He was the State-of-the-Art speaker at the 3rd, 4th, and 6th International Calicivirus Conferences. In 2020, he achieved first efficient human sapovirus culture in collaboration with Drs. Hirotaka Takagi, Linda J. Saif, and Qiuhong Wang and others. His research covers broad aspects of virology, such as molecular epidemiology, classification, development of diagnostic assays, analysis of viral polyprotein processing and viral protease function, screening of anti-calicivirus compounds, antigenic analysis using virus-like particles and propagated viruses.
