Dr. Julie Jean has been a full professor in the Department of Food Science at Laval University, QC, Canada, since 2003. She is a regular member of the Institute of Nutrition and Functional Foods (INAF) at Laval University and directs the Food Virology Laboratory. With her research group, they have developed novel approaches for the detection, inactivation, and control of pathogens, including enteric viruses, in food and environmental samples. She has supervised over 50 graduate students and postdoctoral fellows and is the author of over 80 scientific publications and book chapters. She serves as a member or reviewer on the editorial boards of international scientific journals and grants related to food safety.

Dr. Jean teaches the undergraduate courses "Food Microbiology" and "Microbiological Analysis of Foods" and is also involved in various graduate courses. She is the director of the MSc and PhD programs in Food Science and Technology. In 2019, she received the Université Laval Teaching Excellence Award for her leadership as program director.

During the 2015-2016 academic year, Dr. Jean was seconded for a study and research year, where she served as a visiting scientist during visits to the World Health Organization (WHO) in Geneva, CH, Health Canada in Ottawa, and Nestlé in Lausanne, CH.

For over 10 years (2010 to 2019), Dr. Jean served as President of the Quebec Association for Food Safety. In 2016, she was the first Canadian to receive the prestigious Elmer Marth Educator Award from the International Association for Food Protection for her outstanding contributions as a teacher and to the advancement of food safety. In 2024, she was honored with the title of Fellow of the same association. She serves as an expert on the FAO/WHO Committee on Microbiological Risk Assessment of Viruses in Foods.

Professor Jean received her PhD in Food Science and Technology from Université Laval, as well as MSc and BSc degrees in the same discipline. She also completed a postdoctoral fellowship at North Carolina State University, Raleigh, NC.
